Meet Hicks! He is a very special boy with a lot of love to give! He came into rescue after he was surrendered at the vet by his previous owner due to being diagnosed with heartworm. He has endured 3 months of intense heartworm treatment and now is finally able to feel more himself and find his forever family. He has such a goofy and loving spirit, he is sure to brighten your day!
He loves to chew on bones and appreciates stimulating toys and chews (see notes below). He loves walks and has improved his manners while walking with the help of a gentle leader harness. He can slip out of a collar easily, so a harness is a must for this guy. He kennels well and enjoys spending time in his kennel just to relax during the day. Hicks gets along with EVERYONE - cats, dogs, kittens, kids, and adults. He is VERY food motivated and aims to please. He is rarely vocal and loves to give hugs! He really is a lover and would fit best in a home that can give him the attention he craves.
Hicks will need continued treatment for his heartworm (which is monthly heartgard and a re-test in May 2022) along with strict monitoring until he is cleared from the disease (likely in May, 2022). Any adopter will need to have full understanding of his medical needs and commit to fulfilling his treatments, monitoring, and check ups. He is more than worth the effort!
He will need:
-Monthly (oral only) Heartgard for life - yes, even in the winter months
-Vet apt and blood work in May 2022 (Cost covered by Journey Home at All Pets Animal Hospital)
-Must keep his heart rate from elevating as this can lead to dislodging a worm from the heart and then cause a blockage in a vessel, which could cause a stroke or other ailment. (This has been very doable in his foster home by providing him several slow walks daily, mental stimulation with toys and training, as well as kenneling when he is not able to be supervised).
-Once he is cleared from heartworm he will need two of his molars removed as recommended by the vet, as they are both fractured. Until they are removed, he is not to chew on hard bones or toys such as antlers, hooves, bones, etc. (Cost covered by Journey Home at All Pets Animal Hospital)
-If additional testing or treatment is needed for his heartworm, other than monthly heartgard, Journey Home will cover the cost.
-Hicks will need to be brought to All Pets Animal Hospital in Grand Forks for the described care as part of the adoption agreement.
